What is Kratom?
Kratom is the common name for Mitragyna speciosa, a tree that originated in South-East Asia. For centuries, the leaves of this tree have been used in Thailand for their medicinal and psychoactive qualities that are comparable to that of opiate-based drugs. Thai workers used the leaves as a stimulant. It is also used to help get rid of opium addiction. In recent times the use of Kratom as a recreational drug has also gained popularity.
What are the effects of Kratom?
The effects of Kratom have been described as similar to opiate-based drugs, but milder. The effects are stimulant and euphoric in small doses, becoming calming and narcotic at higher doses. The effects come on after 5 to 10 minutes and can last several hours. However, individual effects vary.
What is the difference between different types of Kratom?
There are several different forms of Kratom available in the market: leaves, powder, capsule and extract. Dried leaves are the most common form of Kratom. Kratom powder usually consists of powdered leaves and is a bit stronger; it also comes in the form of capsules. Extract is a sticky substance that is left after lengthy boiling and straining of leaves and is stronger than plain leaves.
The quality of the leaves is the most important factor for the potency of Kratom. Various types and quality of leaves are available. The blended varieties of Kratom are cheaper, but the high quality leaves or powder, despite being expensive, are worth it as they are far more potent.
How do I use Kratom?
Kratom can be chewed, smoked or made as tea. This last method is the most pleasant and commonly used. Put 5-10 grams of crushed leaves or powder in hot water and let it infuse for a while. Add tea and sugar or honey, if you wish. When using extract, take half of the amounts. It is also possible to make your own extract from leaves that can be stored for later use. See our Preparation page for recipes and tips.
How much should I use?
The amount of Kratom you need depends very much on the strength of the Kratom used, and for the effect you want. For inexperienced users 5-10 grams of leaves should be enough, or half those amounts when using extract. More experienced users may wish to increase the dosage after a while.
Is Kratom dangerous or addictive?
When used sensibly and responsibly, Kratom is not dangerous or addictive. There are some reported cases of Kratom addiction, but these were people who used large amounts on a daily basis for an extended period. When used occasionally as a recreational drug, the health and addiction risks of Kratom are very small. Nevertheless Kratom, like any other drug, is not without risk altogether. Please read the health risks, side effects and usage guidelines.
